The Costs That Never Appear on the Dealer's Quote

  • The tow: with no working key, the car travels by flatbed — a three-figure add-on before any key work starts.
  • The days without a car: rides, rentals, missed shifts — real money that never shows up in the comparison.
  • The two-trip special: some dealers order your key at visit one and program at visit two, with your car stranded in between.

When the Dealer IS the Right Call (We'll Tell You)

Honesty over a sale, always: for a small number of very new models (some vehicles in their first year or two of a redesign) and certain exotics, key programming is still locked to dealer systems. If your key is covered under warranty or a recall, take the free key. And if the car is already at the dealership for other work, adding a key there can make sense. Call us with your year, make, and model — if we can't beat the dealer path, we'll say so on the phone, free.

We're collecting side-by-side examples from real jobs where customers shared their dealer quote — ask us what we've seen for your model when you call.

What the Same Job Looks Like, Hour by Hour

Dealership path: call Monday for a Thursday appointment → arrange the tow → drop-off and shuttle home → key arrives when it arrives → pick the car up Friday. Locksmith path: call us → we arrive (typically under an hour in Lafayette) → key cut, programmed, tested at your car → you drive to lunch. Both end with the same working key; only one of them ends today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a locksmith really make any car key the dealer can?

For the overwhelming majority of vehicles on Indiana roads — yes, the identical working key, cut and programmed to factory spec. The honest exceptions are a small set of brand-new or exotic models whose programming is still dealer-locked. We tell you on the phone, before any service fee, if your vehicle is one of them.

Is a dealership key "better quality" than a locksmith key?

The key is the key. We use OEM and OEM-grade blanks and fobs, cut to the same factory code the dealer uses, programmed through the same vehicle interfaces. What differs is the price, the wait, and who drives to whom — and our work carries a 30 days parts and labor warranty.

Why is the dealership so much more expensive?

Dealership service departments carry dealership overhead, and keys are a classic captive-customer item — when someone believes only the dealer can fix it, the quote reflects that belief. Add the tow (required with no working key) and days off the road, and the gap widens further.

When SHOULD I go to the dealership for a key?

Genuinely: if your vehicle is one of the few very new or exotic models locksmiths can't yet program, if the key is being replaced free under warranty or a recall, or if the car is already sitting at the dealer for other work. Otherwise the math favors the mobile locksmith — and we'll tell you straight if your case is one of the exceptions.

Does going to a locksmith void my warranty?

No. A properly programmed key doesn't touch your powertrain or factory warranty, and no dealer can void a warranty because a locksmith made your key. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your right to independent service in general.
