Frequently Asked Questions
The green key light on my Honda dash keeps blinking. What is it telling me?
That's the immobilizer indicator. A quick blink when you start the car is normal — it means the system checked your key's chip and approved it. If it keeps flashing and the engine won't start, the immobilizer isn't recognizing the key: the chip may be unprogrammed (common with copied keys), damaged, or the wrong generation for your car. We can diagnose and program the right key at your location, usually in one visit.
Honda has different chip generations. Does that change which key I need?
It does. Hondas from the early 2000s generally use what locksmiths call the V-chip, while later models moved to the G-chip, and the two aren't interchangeable — a key with the wrong chip will cut fine but never start the car. My 2015 Civic key looks different from my old one — thicker, with grooves down the middle. Why?
Around 2014 the Civic and Accord switched to a laser-cut high-security blade. The cuts run down the center of a thicker blank instead of along the edge, which makes the key harder to pick or duplicate — and impossible to copy on a standard hardware-store machine. Can I buy a used Honda smart fob on eBay and have you program it?
We'll be straight with you: usually not. Once a Honda smart-entry fob (the push-button kind, common from about 2013–2015 onward on the Accord and CR-V) has been married to another vehicle, it typically can't be re-registered to yours.
