How to Change the Fob Battery Yourself
No shame in DIY here — it's a two-minute job. Find the seam on the fob edge, twist a small flathead screwdriver (or a coin) to pop the halves apart, note which side of the battery faces up, and swap in a fresh cell. Most fobs take a CR2032; larger smart fobs often use a CR2450, and a few use CR2025 or CR1620 — the number is printed on the old battery. Buy a name brand; bargain-bin cells are how fobs end up "broken" a month later.
If your keyed fob hides a screw, it's usually under the metal key ring slot. Push-to-start fobs: slide out the emergency blade first — the seam is usually behind it.

My key fob stopped working suddenly. What’s the most likely cause?
The battery, by a wide margin — even when the fob "worked fine yesterday." Coin cells fade gradually and then fall off a cliff, especially in cold Indiana winters. Swap in a fresh name-brand cell before anything else; it fixes the majority of dead-fob calls we get.
I changed the battery and it still doesn’t work. Now what?
Check that the battery is right-side up and the little metal contacts weren't bent during the swap. If the fob's LED lights but the car ignores it, the fob likely needs reprogramming — some vehicles drop fob pairing after a battery change or a dead car battery. That's a quick on-site fix for us.
Can a key fob just die permanently?
Yes. Drops, washing machines, water, and plain age kill the internal electronics. If a fresh battery plus reprogramming doesn't revive it, the fob is done — we can often move your key blade and transponder chip into a new shell, or supply and program a complete replacement at your car.
Why does my fob only work when I’m right next to the car?
