“I had my key break and lost it and he stayed out and helped make a new one. Decently priced for a new fob and key.”
Key Fob Replacement and Programming in Lafayette, Indiana
Dead remote, lost fob, or a spare that was never programmed — our mobile locksmith comes to you, supplies the right fob, and programs it on the spot. All makes, including push-to-start smart keys.
Replace, Reprogram, or Just a Battery? Diagnose It in 30 Seconds
- No light on the fob when you press a button: almost always the battery. A $5 coin cell may be all you need — try that first.
- Fob lights up but the car ignores it: the fob has likely lost its programming (or the car's receiver needs attention). This is a reprogram, not a replacement.
- Buttons work only when you're touching the door: weak battery or a failing internal antenna — battery first, then replacement if it persists.
- Cracked case, buttons fallen out, went through the wash: replacement. We can often transfer your key blade and chip into a new shell for less than a full new fob.
- Car won't start even though doors unlock: that's the transponder chip, not the remote — see our transponder key page.

Can You Program a Fob I Bought Online?
Honest answer: sometimes. If the FCC ID on the back matches what your vehicle uses and the fob is new (or from a vehicle whose brand allows re-use), we can program it and you'll save money. But many used smart fobs — especially GM, Chrysler-family, and some imports — are permanently locked to their first vehicle, and some cheap aftermarket fobs fail within months. Text us the listing or the FCC ID before you buy and we'll tell you straight whether it will work. If it won't, we carry quality fobs on the van, priced fairly.
Key & Remote Testing
Not sure if the problem is the fob, the battery, or the car? We carry testing equipment that reads the signal your remote actually transmits and checks transponder chip response. In a couple of minutes at your vehicle we can tell you whether the fob is transmitting weakly (battery/antenna), not at all (dead fob), or transmitting fine while the vehicle ignores it (programming or receiver issue) — so you only pay to fix the real problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to program a key fob?
It depends on whether you need just programming (you already have a compatible fob) or the fob plus programming, and whether it's a basic remote or a push-to-start smart key. Call (567) 227-5397 with your year, make, and model for an exact number — and see our cost guide for what drives the price.
My key fob stopped working after I changed the battery. Why?
Usually one of three things: the new battery is in upside down or is a weak off-brand cell, a contact got bent during the swap, or the fob lost its rolling-code sync and needs reprogramming. Some vehicles also need a relearn after power loss. Try the battery again first; if it's still dead, our fob troubleshooting guide walks you through it, or we'll test it on-site.
Can the dealership refuse to program a fob I bought online?
Many dealerships will only program fobs they sell, so yes — that happens a lot. We're more flexible: if the aftermarket or used fob is actually compatible and not locked to another vehicle, we'll program it. If it isn't usable, we'll tell you before you pay for a service call, and we carry fobs on the van either way.
Do you come to me to program a fob?
Yes — fob programming requires being at the vehicle anyway, so mobile service is the natural way to do it. We cover Lafayette, West Lafayette, and surrounding Tippecanoe County, 24/7.
What’s the difference between a key fob and a smart key?
A standard fob locks and unlocks the car but you still start it with a metal key. A smart key (proximity key) stays in your pocket — the car unlocks when you grab the handle and starts with a button. Smart keys cost more to replace because they carry more security hardware, which is exactly where locksmith pricing beats the dealer hardest.
